Most fonts are easily readable at 6 points or smaller, with two highly stylized fonts needing 12 points. Both the graphics and photos are toward the top of the range for AIOs that sell for $130 or less. The 924 is also strong on output quality, earning ratings of good for text, very good for graphics, and the high end of very good for photos. Even the HP 1510 was a bit slower for photos, at 1:20 for each 4-by-6, and 3:06 for each 8-by-10. Similarly, the 924 scored top speed in its class for photos, averaging 1:14 for each 4-by-6 on our tests, and 2:42 for each 8-by-10. The only faster AIO we've seen for $130 or less is the HP PSC 1510 All-in-One, at 18:00. On our business applications suite, it managed a total time of 19 minutes 47 seconds. On our performance tests (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software, the 924 established itself as the new first-place AIO in its price class.

As you might expect from its designation as a photo AIO, you can install either the black and tricolor cartridge that it ships with for four-color printing using cyan, yellow, magenta, and black, or replace the black with a photo cartridge for six-color printing, adding light cyan and light magenta for better-looking photos. The setup is standard for AIOs that connect by USB 2.0, with a fully automated installation program. Consider it appropriate for a home or for light-duty use in a home office.Īt 11.4 by 17.2 by 17.5 inches (HWD), the 924 is small enough to share a desk with or keep handy on a nearby flat surface. But the only real extra the 924 offers is the ability to print directly from a PictBridge camera, which helps give it a claim to being a photo AIO. Unlike some AIOs, the 924 can scan to any fax program that uses a modem in your PC. However, the 924 is an all-in-one (AIO), and as such it's limited-as you would expect at this price-with no automatic document feeder (ADF) or fax modem. If the Dell Photo All-In-One Printer 924 ($89 direct) were strictly a printer, we'd consider it a good choice, with an appropriate combination of speed and output quality for the price.
